What is it and how does it work?

Have you ever been faced with a situation that you didn’t think you could resolve, only to have the solution pop into your head as you were having a shower or walking the dog or chatting to a friend?

We OFTEN know how to deal with what life throws at us and we OFTEN know how to get what we want. Problem is, sometimes it’s buried so deep inside us that we just don’t see it. When we stop telling ourselves we can’t find the answer, or we can’t do it and instead take the time to listen to what we’ve got to tell ourselves, that’s when we figure out what to do.

Collaborating with a coach will speed up this process in many ways. You can expect a coach to:

  • Ask super-focused, thought-proving questions to help you examine a situation at a much deeper level than you normally would.
  • Help you examine your self- beliefs and motivations, and turn unhelpful thoughts into ones that work for you, rather than against you.
  • Provide tools and techniques to unlock your creative genius and find great ideas that move you forward towards your ‘one big thing’.
  • Create a structure that helps you act on the great ideas you come up with, and keep up the momentum through follow-up sessions.
  • Be your number one fan, holding an unwavering belief that you can achieve your big dream, giving you the encouragement you need to take those scary steps.

 

Is it for me?

Unfortunately, coaching is not for everyone. It’s not a magic wand that will get anyone whatever they want without them having to put in any effort. It’s not a question and answer session with the coachee asking the questions and the coach giving the answers. Quite the opposite in fact. Partnering with a coach can be incredibly powerful and transformational, but it also requires a lot of effort on your part. In short coaching is for people who are ready, willing and able to be coached.

 

Ready, willing and able what?

Being READY for coaching means that you are ready for change. Many of us love the drama in our lives. We love to complain about what a sorry lot we’ve been dealt even when we have no intention of doing anything about it. We drag our sorrows around in an imaginary trophy cabinet ready to open up and display to anyone who’s willing to listen. We all know someone who’s been complaining about their jobs for the past 12 months and yet have done nothing about it. If you’re ready to let go of your trophy cabinet and move forward in your life, then you are READY for coaching.

Being WILLING is about taking action. Unlike counselling or therapy which are focused on reflection, coaching is very much about taking action. Are you willing to take full responsibility for achieving your big dream? Are you willing to take the necessary steps to get there? If yes, then coaching is for you.

Being ABLE is about having a healthy mind. Coaching is not counselling or therapy, it does not look into the past but rather focuses on the future. It is aimed at healthy individuals who want to move from an OK place to a GREAT place.

 

Sounds interesting but I’m still not sure…

That’s actually a good thing. You’re giving this process some proper thought, you’re not jumping in lightly. Partnering with a coach WILL take you out of your comfort zone and it WILL challenge you to do things that make you giggle nervously just at the thought of doing them. It will also show you the great joy of taking full responsibility for your future, for achieving things you never thought possible and for creating a life that you’d only dreamed of before.
